Weekly Newsletter for The Freelancers: Here is the latest newsletter of the week starting on 3rd September 2018.
It is clear that there would be very few freelancers who were not involved in regularly using social media. It is also very clear that social media can be a security risk in a number of ways.
Cassie Phillips has written 8 essential security tips for freelancers for the Freelancers Union blog which you can read here.
If you are not sure what social listening is Dominique Jackson has written What is social listening and why it is important? For the Sprotsocial.com which you can read here.
A more detailed look at social media security for business is provided by Christina Newberry with her article 8 social media security tips to mitigate risks which appeared in Hootsuite.com’s blog section which you can read here.
The following is an eBook that explores the subject in greater depth:

Retiring Part-Time And Freelancing Is Not The Only Strategy For People Single Again And Over Fifty
It does not matter which country you live in if you find yourself single again and over fifty with little savings accumulated, you should be motivated to find out coping strategies.
This is going to be an increasingly important issue in developed countries with rapidly aging populations and cost of living expenses rising.
The broad-based cost of living increases, but accommodation and energy costs are often leading the way. Retiree associations, led by the AARP, have been pushing these reforms for some time.
In some countries, governments have been slow to react, but it is now clear that these reforms are essential and avoiding the issues is no longer an option. This is a summary of the various issues here.
Retiring part-time is an obvious strategy, but smart money management and saving on expenses is also a top strategy.
The AARP money management newsletter had this article Secrets of Single Super Savers – Financial wisdom from women who found themselves single again in this month’s newsletter which you can read here.
Although I live in Australia, I am a member of AARP (cost USD16.00) because they are leading the world in non-political advice to members over 50. It is about ideas that can make a meaningful difference in your life.
This is the AARP book that has lot of universal helpful ideas:
Productivity Tip of the Week
Switching From Your 9 To 5 Job To Go Freelancing Is Also About Productivity
For the millennial generation switching from a secure 9 to 5 job with a regular employee income to working full time as a freelancer is, to a large extent, about productivity.
This is because housing affordability for millennials has declined globally, but the hope for owning their own home has not.
The reasons for this are explored in this article Millennials Freelancing Can Help Themselves Save for a Home or Reduce Their Existing Mortgage which appears on our website and you can read here.
In the article, it shows that wages have stagnated for most employees globally while house prices have increased and interest rates are at a historical low.
This has resulted in millennials struggling to save for a house. This means that if they wish to save for a home deposit they have to lift their income.
However, for many to achieve this, they need to sacrifice the security of their 9 to 5 job with the goal of lifting their income, also known as productivity. In our article, we explore 12 reasons why this is a possible way to gain the deposit for their home.
However, besides moonlighting as a freelancer before you make the jump to a full-time freelancer, which is always recommended, there are other issues to consider.
Jennifer Mellon has written Thinking of Ditching Your 9-to-5 Job And Going Freelance? Six Tips for Making the Jump for the Forbes.com which you can read here.
As with most things in life it is better to learn from others than by making mistakes. If you are going to moonlight as a freelancer here is someone else’s experience to check out:
Work-Life Balance Tip of the Week
Work-Life Balance Includes Preparing Yourself And Your Family For Jobs Of The Future
It does not matter in which country you live in or what your occupation is, the technology changes that are occurring are going to have a dramatic impact on your work-life balance. Whole industries are being disrupted by technology and the traditional ways of doing things are being swept aside.
One of the main disruptive innovators is Amazon. You can read A Dozen Disruptions: Amazon’s Pursuit of Massive Market Share in 12 Major Industries from Bisnow which was published by the Forbes.com here.
I am telling you this for a reason; it is because the millennial generation who are looking now to buy a home and start families are finding that housing affordability is beyond them. This has happened in many countries. It is the reason that The World Economic Forum and the International Monetary Fund are running forums about this issue, see here and here.
The critical issue for millennial families is understanding that if they can manage their work-life balance with technology to overcome the stagnation of wages globally (see the OECD report here) it improves their wealth creation chances. This relates to housing affordability and preparing for retirement and jobs of the future.
If you need some help to decide whether your current job is future proof have a look at this quiz from the World Economic Forum entitled How future proof are your skills? which you can read here.
Financial Tip of the Week
How Hard Is It To Have A Foreign Currency Income Stream As A Retiree?
For many retirees in developed countries, like Australia where I live, maintaining their standard of living with rising living costs and health insurance premiums is challenging.
For some retirees, the solution can be retiring part-time as pioneered by the AARP, see here and now taken up by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission, see here.
However, this does not suit everyone. Amazon has produced a simple method for those who want to undertake some low-level training in technology to endeavor to supplement their income, even if only sufficient to cover the cost of health insurance.
The method that Amazon has developed is allowing affiliate links to Pinterest accounts which you can read about here. For further information you can look inside the eBook here:
Amazon News
Australia has the worst drought in living memory in some regions at the moment. We have written an article about the need to help them supplement their farm income which you can read here.
We thought we would investigate whether Amazon Services and technology could help farmers and this is what we found:
It is hard to believe that a farmer can
run a business from their farm that distributes products internationally that does not relate to their farm business but helps supplement their farm income. This has occurred because Amazon Services enable you to do just that. You can read about it here.
